What are some of the most famous works of art depicting rape?
-The Rape of Proserpina (sculpture) by Bernini. It depicts the rape of Persephone (the daughter of Demeter, an Olympian Goddess) by Hades (God of the underworld). The myth explains the growing season, but it also encompasses man's historical power over women, a mother's loss, and a woman's inability to (historically) stand up and make her own choices. The sculpture was created in the 1600s but it is most likely modeled from a Roman marble, in turned copied from an earlier Greek sculpture, traditionally bronze. Google the image, the lifelike sculpture-in-the-round evokes emotions from the viewer - from the indentations of Hades fingers into her flesh, to the anguish and fear imprinted on her face. This work is not only a baroque style classic piece, but the 2500+ years of mythological history that supports the work are a testament to its impact on viewers.Sculpture. The rape of Sabine Woman,by Giambologna; rape as in abduction.
